CYPHER TELEGRAM from the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary

of State for the Colonies.

Addressed to the Secretary of State for the Colonies

telegram No.165 of the 2nd June repeated to Tokyo telegram No.48

Shanghai telegram No.66.

(48) My immediately preceding telegram refers to the following

telegram from Canton No.129 of the.1st June begins:

Japanese Consul General has just informed me that he has

learnt on good suthority that one Chinese military aeroplane is

leaving Kai Tak aerodrone tonight at 9 o'clock for Chungking and

that three more meeting due to leave at 2 a.m. tomorrow for Chung-

king or Kweilin. He has asked me to inform you that Japanese

aeroplanes will be waiting for them to prevent their flight and

will if necessary attack any base which they may be using. He

therefore requests that these aeroplanes may be prevented from

leaving Kai Tak.

I have replied that I know nothing of any such flights

but that attack by the Japanese aircraft within British territory

will have the most serious consequences. I have asked Mr. O

to pass this warning immediately to the Japanese authorities concerned.

Ends. And following is my telegram No.60 of the 1st June to Canton

begins: Zour telegram No.129. There are no Chinese military

aeroplanos in the colony.

Only flight tonight is ordinary Eurasia plane at 3 a.m.
